A multi-site exploration of Kelly Akashi's work, which began with the now-closed exhibition Formations at the Frye Art Museum, will continue with Encounters. Formations explored the Los Angeles-based artist's focus on craft and included Conjoined Tumbleweeds, a bronze cast of plants collected from Poston, Arizona, where members of Akashi's family were incarcerated in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II. In Encounters, Akashi continues to share her interest in material transformation and time-mapping with sculptural works in wax, bronze casting, fire, hand-blown glass, silicone, and rope.
