Today's "good for him!" target is Rick Riordan, who spent 15 years teaching middle school English and history before becoming one of the most successful middle-grade novelists, like, maybe ever. The word wrangler behind the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series has sold over 190 million copies of his books, so I'm guessing his salary has improved since his educator days.
