Petite Mort
Pacific Northwest Ballet's season opener promises "as much whimsy, artistry, and drama as possible," which is also what I'm going for with my Instagram stories. I'm guessing that PNB will do a better job than I do, though: This performance's triple bill packs a punch with Jiri Kylian’s Petite Mort and Sechs Tänze, both returning after a long hiatus, and Alexander Ekman’s Cacti. The latter, a "gleeful and knowing parody of the art form’s greater excesses," incorporates giant Scrabble tiles and, yes, cacti. You know what doesn't make me think of spiky succulents? Orgasms. PNB dares to go there, though—Petite Mort is a French euphemism for an orgasm that directly translates to "little death," or, more precisely, "that calm, bereft, post-orgasm feeling that makes you want to have a Godard film and a cigarette for breakfast," in the words of Stranger editor Rich Smith.
