Seattle Modern Orchestra's fourteenth season features a wide-ranging international lineup of composers with works stretching geographic, physical, and musical boundaries. The season opens with an evening of dynamic chamber music from across the Americas. Curated by Cristina Valdés, longtime SMO pianist and founder of the Seattle Latin American Music Festival, this program features music by composers with roots in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Argentina. Works by Angélica Negrón and Luis Fernando Amaya utilize electroacoustic soundscapes, José-Luis Hurtado's Retour invites SMO musicians to explore individualized timbral worlds, and the music of Silvina Milstein and Carlos Sanchez-Guiterrez offers the thrill of intricate chamber music dialogue.

SMO's season also includes an exploration of new and historical works of Music Theatre with pieces that ask performers to move, speak, and break the fourth wall. C. Neil Parsons, a self-defined "hybrid artist" joins as soloist, director, and choreographer. Bethany Younge considers composing "an act of bodily knowing"; her new work for SMO celebrates the physicality of performance, and pairs with the dystopian humor of Mauricio Kagel's iconic FinaleFrederic Rzewski's Moonrise with Memories will feature Parsons on bass trombone, with text by Langston Hughes, and Younge's Orbits fills the space in Town Hall's Great Hall with roving musicians.

SMO continues its local collaborations and support of young composers with a residency and joint-concert at University of Washington's School of Music.
